Frequently Asked Questions

What is Alternative Energy?
It is electricity generated by non-fossil fuel sources like solar, wind and methane gas from decomposing animal waste or garbage. These resources are replenished naturally and minimize harm to the environment. Wabash Valley Power Association (WVPA), Kosciusko REMC’s power provider, includes methane gas, wind and anaerobic fuel sources as part of its alternative energy mix.

What is methane gas and how is it renewable?
Garbage and waste put into landfills decompose over time. Landfill gas, which is primarily methane, is a natural by-product of this process. This gas is considered renewable because it is produced through natural decomposition of organic materials.

Do KREMC members actually receive power from a renewable source?
Your participation in the Envirowatts program ensures that power generated from alternative energy sources continues to expand, resulting in less dependence on fossil fuels. You are supporting the movement towards using more alternative energy to provide your power needs.

Why does alternative energy cost more?
Facilities that generate alternative energy are often more expensive to build and operate because these technologies are still evolving. It is expensive to develop the equipment needed, but as customer demand for alternative energy sources increase, more technologies will be implemented. Although the price is slightly higher, the impact of alternative energy sources on the environment is less, rendering its value immeasurable.

Where will my money go?
By participating in the Envirowatts program, you’re supporting the on-going development of alternative energy resources. A portion of the revenues is also used to fund the Envirowatts Grants program conducted every year by KREMC. Grants are made to area non-profit organizations who conduct special projects related to helping the environment, such as tree plantings or environmental education; or for promoting and implementing energy efficiency programs. These grants are awarded annually in conjunction with the celebration of Earth Day on April 22. Applications for the grants can be found at www.kremc.com.

How much will my participation in the Envirowatts program cost?
Customer cost will vary depending on the option selected.

Option A:  $.010 per kwh - first 750 kwh per month (No additional charge – over 750 kwh per month). The maximum a customer will pay is $7.50/month and $90/year.

Option B: $.010 per kwh – first 250 kwh per month (No additional charge – over 250 kwh per month).
The maximum a customer will pay is $2.50/month and $30/year.

How does a KREMC member enroll?
Members simply need to complete and return an application form. There will be no refunds if a customer chooses to opt out of the program, and the participation is one year minimum.
