PLAY IT SAFE FAMILY SAFETY DAY SLATED FOR SEPTEMBER 19;
KREMC, WARSAW FIRE DEPARTMENT, AND OTHER AREA LAW ENFORCEMENT AND EMERGENCY RESPONDERS PRESENT DAY OF FUN

Warsaw, Indiana…There’s nothing more fun than playing, and there’s nothing more important than safety! Put fun and safety together, and you have the makings for “Play It Safe Family Safety Day” sponsored by Kosciusko REMC and the Warsaw Fire Department. Other presenting agencies include the Warsaw Police Department, Multi-Township EMS, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department, Willie FM 103.5, and NEWS with Stacey Page.

This year’s festivities are scheduled for Saturday, September 19, 10 a.m.-3 p.m., at Warsaw’s Central Park and Center Lake Pavilion. Working off the success of last year’s event that drew more than 3,000 people, this year’s Play It Safe Family Safety Day will have even more activities devoted to health and safety. “We were able to grow the event through some generous community grants, which have allowed us to bring in quite a few new activities this year,” said Shirley Fetrow, event coordinator for the Warsaw Fire Department.

New this year are scheduled presentations on both the Kerlin Motor Company Stage and around the park. These presentations include:

10:00 a.m. Central Park Parkview Hospital Samaritan helicopter arrives
10:15 a.m. Kerlin Stage KREMC presents A.C. Sparks, Electric Detective
11:15 a.m. Kerlin Stage Police & Fire Dog Demonstrations
12:15 p.m. Kerlin Stage Safety First Show by Family Time Entertainment
1:00 p.m. Central Park Lutheran Hospital Air helicopter arrives
1:15 p.m. Center Lake Dive Team Demonstration on the Center Lake Pier
2:15 p.m. Kerlin Stage Fire Safety Show by Family Time Entertainment
*All activities are subject to change.

In addition to the stage presentations, there are many family-friendly, FREE activities planned for the day. New this year is the HealthWorks! Hummer from South Bend Memorial Hospital, where kids of all ages can brush the giant teeth, pick the giant nose, jump rope with the intestines and learn about digestion! Everyone receives a HealthWorks! sticker or tattoo.

Other free activities planned include: Safe Assured kids ID kits containing digital photo ID cards and a mini-CD encrypted with personal data, provided by the Warsaw Breakfast Optimist’s Club; free dental screenings by Dr. William Myers; Build & Grow activity kits provided by Lowe’s; animal display by the Animal Welfare League, a Power Town live-line demo and bucket truck rides provided by Kosciusko REMC.

Other activities will include a Warsaw Police Department bicycle rodeo, free make-and-take first aid kits, impaired driving simulation goggles; and the Warsaw Fire Department Save-A-Life trailer and hazards obstacle course.

Also scheduled are: rope rescue demonstrations by the Warsaw Fire Department; a display of emergency vehicles including fire trucks, ambulances, law enforcement vehicles, Samaritan and Lutheran helicopters, Kosciusko County disaster response/incident command trailer, a bucket truck from KREMC, and a display of antique fire trucks.

The fun continues with a Dalmatian bouncer, a maze and slide sponsored by DARE, and a maze from the Indiana National Guard will be available for the children’s enjoyment. Sparky the Fire Dog. DAREN the DARE Lion and the Crash Test Dummies will meet and greet attendees, and the Kid’s Tent will include the Symmetry Medical Wheel of Safety Game, and other health and safety games from the American Red Cross. There will also be free face painting and balloon sculptures.

Inside the Center Lake Pavilion, a variety of health and safety organizations will also have booths to provide safety information and materials. Food and beverages will be on sale at the event to benefit area non-profit groups, including Junior Achievement and Our Father’s House. Guests can also register to win a variety of prizes at the information booths, including smoke detectors, car seats, bike helmets, fire extinguishers, and more.

“”Last year’s event was attended by over 3,000 people,” said Troy Cozad, manager of marketing and communications for Kosciusko REMC. “This year’s event is a kid’s dream come true. There are tons of great activities to participate in, and families will love it because it’s all free, except for food. We hope that every family in the county takes advantage of this great event.”

“Play it Safe Family Safety Day is a great collaborative effort between many community organizations and businesses,” said Warsaw Fire Chief Mike Rice. “We can’t think of a better way to communicate these important safety messages to our community, and we have worked hard to make this event bigger and better than ever. We hope the community comes out to support us and enjoy all the fun activities at Play It Safe Family Safety Day.”
