KREMC & Grace College to Co-sponsor KOSCIUSKO County & Regional Spelliing Bees; Local Bees Scheduled for February 4TH & 6TH

Warsaw, Indiana – The winner of the 2010 Kosciusko County Spelling Bee will be determined during the first week of February, according to Blaine Conley, Akron Elementary School principal and coordinator of the 2010 Kosciusko County Spelling Bee.

The 2010 Bee will be conducted on two separate evenings at Mentone Elementary School. On Tuesday, February 2 at 6:30 p.m., 5th and 6th grade winners from area schools will compete to determine the champion of their grade levels.

7th and 8th grade school winners will compete to determine their champion on Thursday, February 4th, at 6:30 p.m., Approximately 30 students will participate in the two bees.

Following the determination of the 7th and 8th grade winner on February 4, there will be a spell-off between the two grade division champions, resulting in a grand champion for the Kosciusko County Bee. The grand champion will advance to the regional Fort Wayne Journal Gazette Spelling Bee, slated for March 13 at Anthis Career Center in Fort Wayne.

The winners of the two grade division bees will each receive a $2,500 Richard R. Long Scholarship. The scholarship is given in recognition of Mr. Long’s many years of service to the children, teachers and parents of North Webster School, and in honor of his work for the International Palace of Sports, now known as the Shoop Sports and Youth Foundation. The Shoop Foundation funds the spelling bee scholarships to help provide future higher education for the spelling bee winners.

For the third year, Kosciusko REMC is serving as a presenting sponsor for the local and regional bees. “When costs increased for schools to participate in the bees several years ago, we felt it was important to help the schools out with funding,” said Kosciusko REMC Manager of Marketing & Communications Troy Cozad. “Because we are strongly committed to supporting education in our county, we thought this was a good project for us to step up and support.”

In addition to Kosciusko REMC and Touchstone Energy Cooperative sponsorship, Grace College has also signed on as a presenting sponsor for the local and regional spelling bees. “Because of the spelling bee’s heritage of promoting academics, Grace College is proud to help sponsor this year’s county and regional spelling bees,” said Dr. Paulette Sauders, chair of the Department of English and Journalism at Grace College.  “We are happy to be involved in our community and in encouraging young scholars.”
