Electricity + Water = DANGER!
If it's raining or the ground is wet, avoid using electric yard tools. Never step into a flooded area - especially basements - if water is in contact with electrical outlets, appliances or cords. And do not use any electrical appliances or touch circuit breakers or fuses when you are wet or are standing in water.
Keep kids safe around electricity . . .
Take some time to tell them never to:
* Climb trees near power lines.
* Climb a utility pole.
* Enter an electric substation for any reason - even on a dare or to retrieve a lost ball. Electric substations contain high-voltage equipment, which can kill you.
Call 8-1-1 before you dig!
Whether you're installing a new sprinkler system, planting a tree or adding on to your home, make sure you call 8-1-1or 1.800.382.5544 before you dig. Save yourself needed expense and effort by making sure you know where cables are located. Call 8-1-1 before you dig!
Go fly a kite!
Just keep it away from power lines. When flying kites or model airplanes, look for large open areas in a park or field, safely away from trees and overhead power lines. If a kite gets stuck in a tree near a power line, do not climb up to get it. Call us instead.
Look up and live!
While you're working in the fields and around the house this summer, please be aware of the location of overhead powerlines.
Go GFCI!
Ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) help prevent electrocutions and electrical shock injuries. GFCIs are especially important to have installed in areas near water, like kitchens and bathrooms, as well as in outdoor electric outlets. Portable GFCIs require no tools to install and are available at prices ranging from $12 to $30.
Take a tour . . .
. . . a safety tour! Tour your home and replace any cords or plugs that are worn or cracked. Use protective covers on all unused plug outlets within reach of a youngster. Keep appliances away from water. Unplug small appliances when not in use.
